Septarian forms when mineral-rich sedimentary mud deposits harden and undergo dehydration over millions of years, creating shrinkage cracks. These cracks are later filled with minerals like calcite, aragonite, and barite, resulting in its characteristic pattern.

Septarian's structure features a matrix of hardened mudstone encased by geometric mineral-filled cracks, often with vibrant coloration.

Septarian is commonly found in regions like Utah in the United States, Madagascar, and Morocco.
