Howlite forms in evaporite deposits, where calcium, boron, and silica combine in alkaline environments over time. Howlite crystals grow in nodules, often resembling cauliflower in shape.

Howlite's structure is porous and soft, with a Mohs hardness of about 3.5, making it easy to carve and dye.

Howlite is commonly found in Canada, specifically in Nova Scotia, and the United States, particularly California.
